The first people to occupied the Korea peninsula was the Tungusic branch of the Ural-Altaic language family from northwestern regions of Asia. In the beginning the land was divided into different kingdoms. By 668 AD the Korea peninsula was unified by the Shilia kingdom. In 1910 the Japanese colonized the Korea peninsula until the end of the World War II in 1945. After the World War II the Korea peninsula was divided at the 38 parallel with the Soviet Union occupying the North and United States occupying the south. In 1948 two different countries were created. The south became the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the north became the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). The same year North Korea got its independent, the Soviet installed Kim II-Sung as the country’s leader. In 1950 North Korea invaded South Korea starting the Korean War. A coalition of 16 United Nation countries lead by the United Sates supported South Korea, well China supported North Korea. The conflict continued until 1953 when an armistice agreement was signed by the two countries. A peace agreement has never been signed and the countries are divided by a demilitarized zone. North Korea was lead by Kim II- Sung until his death in 1994.  After his death, his son Kim Jong II took over leading the country until 2010. In 2010 Kim Jong II died and his son Kim Jing Un became North Korea’s current leader.
